 BUILT BEFORE 1974

ORGANIZED BY: CYPRUS CIVIL ENGINEERS AND ARCHITECTS ASSOCIATION (CCEAA)

&

CHAMBER OF CYPRUS TURKISH  ARCHITECTS

Introduction

Since the opening of the checkpoints,

we saw the opportunity as Architects to find a way to help  to preserve,  safeguard and operate  the religious buildings of Cyprus which were abandoned after 1974.

Project Description

The title of the project was: List and preliminary evaluation of the religious buildings of Cyprus built before 1974.

Methods

Listing these buildings is the first step towards preserving, safeguarding and
managing them. The list included such details as:

1.Geographical position
2.Simple historical description
3.Topographical plan,
4.Photographical description inside and outside
5.Information about existing Architectural plans (where is possible)
6. Preliminary structure evaluation.

This work was only the first part of our project. In the second part we are going to
propose the actions and measurements which have to be taken in order to preserve,
safeguard and operate the religious buildings.

Results

There are 620 religious buildings in Cyprus:
 505 Greek Cypriot religious buildings
 115 Turkish Cypriot religious buildings

Some of the problems facing these buildings:
 most of the buildings are abandoned
 some of them are in a very bad condition
 some of them are demolished
 some of them are in Military zones.

These buildings are the historical, cultural, architectural and religious heritage of Cyprus.

 many of them are of great Architectural value
 many are ancient monuments with historical value
 others have enormous cultural value for at least one community
 the religious buildings are essential as places of worship, in order for one to express their religion freely. Freedom to practice one's religion unhindered is a fundamental human right, as written in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance."

The purpose of our Organization is to help the people of Cyprus to preserve and safeguard their Religious buildings. We as Architects consider this today as one of our main priorities. In the verses of a Greek Cypriot poet you can see the meaning of our effort
